Etymology: Borrowed from Middle Mongol ᠰᠠᠮᠰᠠ (samsa, “nasal septum”). Jegorov and Fedotov also compare Common Turkic *tumšuk (“nose, beak”), however this is dubious for phonetic reasons. EDAL reconstructs Proto-Turkic *sum-, however such a word is not attested in any other Turkic language.
